Pune Mahanagar Parivahan Mahamandal Limited's (PMPML) plan to make air-conditioned (AC) buses run on Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) part of their fleet is in the midst of a controversy, with the urban development (UD) ministry saying that the transport body get in AC buses that run on diesel.
It may be noted that the transport body wants to get 200 such buses, which are part of the total 650 buses sanctioned for Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission.
The PMPML authorities firmly believe that AC public buses would pose to be a huge attraction for people who use their personal cars. "Since each AC bus may carry up to 45 passengers, the number of people opting for these buses instead of their cars would increase significantly," said a senior official. The officials said the response to the existing ten AC buses has increased after the fares were revised.
